The dhow is synonymous with coastal East Africa. It is a traditional triangular-sailed Arab boat that has been sailing in the area for millennia, carrying slaves, travellers, trade goods and fishermen all over the Indian Ocean. Both the design and the sailing methods have remained mostly unchanged over the centuries, and dhows continue to work in large numbers throughout East Africa. Our Dhow Safaris offer unique trips around the Pemba bay where you have the opportunity to see dolphins, whales during their migration period and picnic, swim and snorkel on deserted beaches. Kaskazini will pick you up early at your hotel for the 45km drive to Lake Nikwita, passing through the villages of Mieze and Metuge. Lake Nikwita is a permanent body of water which attracts hundreds of waterbirds from the surrounding area, including visiting coastal and migratory species, as well as numerous colourful amphibians. An early start guarantees you sightings of dozens of different species as you walk around the edge of the lake. You can also go out onto the lake in a dugout canoe, poled by a local fisherman, if you want to get a closer look at the birdlife. Breakfast will be served in the shade of the lakeside trees. On the way back to Pemba, there will be a short stop to visit the painted church at Mieze, which depicts the stories of the Bible in unique Mozambican style. You will arrive back in Pemba in time for lunch. $45 per person, min 2 with transfer included to and from the hotel.
During the migration season (Aug - Oct) loads of Humpback whales, often accompanied by calves, pass close to Pemba, sometimes coming into the bay to feed and rest. Kaskazini organises whale watching excursions from Wimbe beach. Make sure to enquire if you are around during this period.
Kaskazini will pick you up from your hotel at your leisure and transfer you to Il Pirata on Murrébuè beach (30 minutes drive from Wimbe) south of Pemba. Susi & Carlo, owners of this stunning restaurant & bar, are famous for their hospitality and you are guaranteed an excellent Italian lunch as well as a quiet and safe time on this endless white beach.
